The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
