A defense minister has confirmed that the MoD is currently looking into the possible security risks posed by Chinese cars, while personnel have been advised to refrain from talking about secret matters in any vehicles.
Safety Advice for MoD Staff
During a recently aired appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about classified information while travelling in China-made vehicles.
The minister said that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that security is a concern in every contemporary cars.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about safety.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Security Background
This announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and cause chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
The broader defence situation highlights the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in all areas of official operations, including transport use to discussions practices.
