The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
