The former Brazilian president arrested after being declared a risk of fleeing

Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of his transfer to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.

The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, the capital city, is situated around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to murder the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, many his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
