This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical biological terror, but inside Together lies a intense contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
